FlexEnable flexible organic LCD display in many applications Proven to have excellent value

Today's glass occupies more than 90% of the displays sold on the market, but they cannot meet the shape retention, slimness and robustness requirements of many new applications. Cambridge, UK-based FlexEnable is at the forefront of the wave of change, pushing flexible organic (O) to many industry and sector markets-OLCD has the advantages of thinness, lightness, shatter resistance and shape retention, and has the same advantages as glass The same quality and performance of LCD.

These global industry segments include the consumer product market, in which electronic designs such as miniaturization are developing rapidly, continuing to integrate a variety of innovative devices, including white goods connected through the Internet of Things (IoT) and voice-enabled “assistants” Devices, these products are very popular with buyers who like early adopters. IHS Markit market analysis predicts that 470 million such smart devices will enter consumer homes this year.

Although many of these appliances will have unique shapes, they still require high-quality active matrix displays that can be clearly viewed from different angles and distances. This is a major problem for traditional displays using rigid glass substrates. FlexEnable's first OLCD display offers a cost-effective and scalable solution with the lowest manufacturing cost of all flexible display technologies. They use flexible substrates and can conform to and surround curved surfaces, for example, to make room for where control and switching devices are needed.

FlexEnable is working with leading global consumer electronics brands to redefine displays for today's design-conscious consumer products.

As the automotive electronics field continues to expand rapidly, vehicle designers can choose from a variety of sensors and network options for connected cars. Drivers can now use a range of automation, safety and communication functions, and for passengers, cars have become infotainment centers.

However, the visual interface may become a problem because the rigid display is not suitable for the curved internal design of the vehicle. For these designs, ergonomic efficiency and comfort have become a top priority. FlexEnable Flexible OLCD displays based on organic materials can provide answers to the new era of design freedom in the automotive field.

Profiled and curved flexible displays provide a brand new solution that not only improves vehicle safety, but also provides unobstructed field of view and beautiful appearance inside the car. In addition, they provide unique selling points for car manufacturers. IHS Markit predicts that the market size of automotive display systems will reach nearly US $ 21 billion by 2022.

Paul Cain, Director of Strategy at FlexEnable, said: "Consumer products and the automotive market are examples of today's constantly interconnected world, redefining our perception of these products and how they enhance people's lives and add value. FlexEnable rethinks the shape and function Capability is driving a wave of innovation in displays, and this wave has long been trapped by the rigid constraints of glass substrates. Our flexible OLCD display can bring a wealth of new solutions for new and old applications.

Consumer demand in the smartphone market has driven the industry to adopt bezel-less displays, resulting in a larger display area, while still maintaining a compact form factor. With the help of flexible display technology, notebook computers and tablet computers can use the same function, for example, a larger screen can be used in the same size of the notebook computer case.

Using a flexible OLED display may be an option, but OLED is still a high-cost technology, especially for larger area applications. The flexible OLCD display provided by FlexEnable can be expanded in size while keeping costs low. Most importantly, they can achieve the curved and folded edges required for borderless displays. In addition, they are shatterproof and thin, making them an attractive choice for tablet and notebook manufacturers, with the goal of reducing the weight of the device, while optimizing the size of the display and product safety, and optimizing the battery and handling ability.

In the TV and display market, high image quality is the market's goal, but the price of ultra-high contrast OLED technology, which is considered to be the leader in display performance, is still expensive and exceeds the affordability of most consumers. Traditional glass substrate LCD manufacturers now see "dual cell" LCDs competing with OLEDs, supporting similar levels of high contrast.

This technology involves stacking two LCDs, but this involves four layers of glass and requires a brighter backlight, thus increasing manufacturing complexity and cost. At the same time, the glass layer also increases the distance between the cells, making it impossible to achieve true pixel-level high contrast for OLED displays.

FlexEnable's OLCD technology overcomes the problems of increased thickness and lack of true pixel-level local dimming. The technology's flexible organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) substrate is 10 times thinner than glass. The result is better optical performance and power efficiency, and reduced manufacturing complexity at a lower cost.

Another major advantage is that OLCD displays can be expanded to the size of large LCDs that are now used in many televisions and displays, and can be manufactured on the same 8/9/10 generation production line that is used today for glass displays.

Large glass LCD displays usually have a maximum size of 85/86 inches and can replace fixed content posters for street advertising. This is a powerful tool for delivering information to potential customers, but they also have some disadvantages, including bulkiness, flatness and rigidity.

In contrast, FlexEnable's organic LCD (OLCD) technology provides the same brightness and vivid colors, as well as the same eye-catching video features, but at a lower cost, and because it has the advantage of no glass, it is slim and lightweight. And it is suitable for the typical curved and uneven shapes and sizes of many advertising venues, whether in retail stores or on the streets.
