Hewlett-Packard will push 17-inch OLED flexible screen
Hewlett-Packard plans to launch a foldable 17-inch laptop with an LG OLED flexible screen later this year. According to Korean media The Elec, the polyimide (PI) film required for the flexible screen of this foldable laptop will be mass-produced by SKIE Technology (SKIET).
So far, manufacturers have used two types of flexible display covers for foldable devices, PI films and ultra-thin glass (UTG) covers, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
HP's foldable laptops will feature 4K flexible displays that unfold from a compact eleven-inch to a large, beautiful seventeen-inch device, likely using the curved OLED panels LG showed off at the CES expo earlier this year. It is a touchscreen and also supports stylus input.
HP allegedly ordered about 10,000 flexible OLED displays and curved cover films to SKIET and LG. HP chose SKIET's cover films because other suppliers offered much higher prices and HP tried to control production costs. The fact that it is likely to mean that it will try to make the retail label more acceptable as competition in the foldable laptop space is likely to intensify later this year.
