What is the difference between transflective, transmissive, and reflective displays ?
Transmissive LCDs: always require a backlight to be visible and provide the highest brightness display as well as handle high-resolution images or videos. They are best suited for applications in low lighting conditions where direct sunlight viewing is NOT involved.
Reflective LCDs: are easily read in bright sunlight and since they do not have a backlight, power consumption is reduced and battery life can be extended so they are best suited for portable devices.
Transflective LCDs: have both reflecting and transmitting properties and offer the most versatile viewing in direct sunlight or when combined with a backlight can be viewed in low light conditions. They're commonly used in industrial and medical equipment, where it's essential to have high visibility in any lighting conditions.
